KFC ‘driving’ innovation with world-first restaurant concept in Australia
Newcastle, Australia, July 15, 2019- KFC has today announced it will open a first of its kind Drive Thru Only restaurant in Newcastle NSW, a completely new concept for the fast food industry.
The brand-new Drive Thru Only format is the first design and technology innovation to come to the well-known and loved traditional drive thru concept in over two decades. With an impressive five lanes boasting new technology, the development is set to ‘drive’ significant speed and efficiency in ordering and collecting the Colonel’s finest.
With eCommerce becoming more and more important to Australians who are leading ever busier lives and looking for more convenience in their day to day, KFC has seen online ordering through its app increase 100% year on year for the last five years. These figures have led KFC to look at how it can make its service quicker, easier and more convenient for Aussie’s that want hot chook in their hands, pronto!
As part of a wider tech innovation drive sweeping KFC in Australia with Aussies already enjoying the app and Alexa voice ordering, KFC has invested around $1.5 million specifically in this new concept to innovate and perfect the experience for its customers.
At the new Drive Thru Only concept, Aussies will be able to order and pay for a KFC meal with the KFC smartphone app or website before arriving at the restaurant. This is a huge win for those who want a seamless experience and just want to enjoy hot, tasty chicken. All, Drive Thru Only customers need to do is enter a unique four-digit code generated by the smartphone app on a touchscreen receiver, which will send their order to the kitchen where it is freshly prepared, ready for collection.
For those that still do like a chat, the friendly KFC team will be waiting to take your order as there will be two traditional order and payment lanes alongside the three app and website order lanes.

Construction of the KFC Drive Thru Onlyrestaurant in Newcastle started in late June and will be open to the public in early November. The first of its kind, the Drive Thru Only restaurant in Newcastle will be a trial for potential rollout across Australia.
